On Friday, Mr. Foley resigned abruptly after being confronted with a series of sexually explicit Internet messages he is reported to have sent to under-age Congressional pages. He stands accused of being the very kind of predator he had denounced. The first e-mail messages to one male page, sexually suggestive but not explicit, were reported by ABC News on Thursday. But by Friday, other pages had come forward with more blatant instant messages.
Dennis Hastert's indictment resurrects Foley scandal
Mark Foley - Wikipedia
NEW YORK - Even today, two years after Mark Foley's very public fall from grace, the former congressman can't explain why he sent lurid, sexually explicit computer messages to male teens who had worked as Capitol Hill pages. Sitting in his room at the Four Seasons Hotel in New York this week, the Florida Republican, wearing a yellow tie with blue elephants, finally broke his silence. Foley insists he did nothing illegal and never had sexual contact with teens, just inappropriate Internet conversations. Investigations by the FBI and Florida authorities ended without criminal charges. And while he concedes his behavior was "extraordinarily stupid," he remains somewhat unwilling to accept full public scorn. That's where my responsibility lies.
The scandal involving former U. Mark Foley of Florida led to a House Ethics Committee investigation that found Hastert and many others were "willfully ignorant" in responding to repeated warnings that Foley had behaved improperly with pages and former pages. Congressional expert Norm Ornstein said Hastert's past actions could be viewed through a new lens in light of the explosive allegations he now faces. Law enforcement sources say the misconduct dates to when Hastert was a teacher and wrestling coach in Yorkville, Ill. Hastert was still speaker when the "sexting" case involving Foley, then 52, exploded into public view.
Kirk Fordham , chief of staff to Rep. Tom Reynolds and former chief of staff for Foley, also resigned as a result of the scandal. The questionable conversations, which took place between and , were investigated by the FBI for possible criminal violations.
